Stoic Land Use
Economically & Environmentally Sustainable Forestry and Soil Care
Stoic Land Use helps landowners and natural resource managers find economically viable solutions to land-use challenges, while always respecting the integrity of our natural environment.
Harnessing nature’s productivity for essential goods and services underlies our ability to generate wealth and improve human well-being, but doing so must be grounded in a deeply considered land ethic.
Solutions to land use challenges should be built on a solid foundation of ecosystem management principles that consider ecology, environmental change and human prosperity.

Using Woodlands Wisely
Forests should be a source of prosperity for landowners, a source of joy for society, and a source of habitat for our treasured wildlife.
Forests provide many benefits. They purify drinking water, stabilize soil, absorb carbon dioxide, and provide habitat for beloved flora and fauna. Forests also support our physical and mental well-being, through recreation and solitude. Forests are also a source of material goods that support us economically and improve the quality of life of the people that purchase forest-products.
Despite the ability of forests to provide numerous essential benefits, countries around the world all confront challenges in keeping land forested. With forests, the potential for short-term financial gain is much lower than other land uses, generating significant pressure to convert forests to agriculture, residential or other industrial uses.
However, forest do consistently generate value, with limited input, over long periods of time, and are thus a strategically wise element of a well-diversified investment portfolio. Like so many things, the key to generating wealth lies in having a strategic plan in place to ensure that your values are brought to the fore when deciding on your approach to woodlot ownership.
Stoic Land Use helps landowners improve the economic viability of their property, without compromising ecological integrity. Smart silviculture positively impacts forest productivity and future timber value, while simultaneously working to restore the natural character of forested landscapes.
Regenerate Soil Health
Intensifying agriculture has taken a heavy toll on PEI’s farmed landscape. However, many options are available to start the process of regenerating soil health, including supplementing your farm’s nutrition with compost, bolstering soil organic matter with biochar, and integrating permaculture crops into permanent soil protection structures. Contact Stoic Land Use to discuss planning and implementation of your on-farm soil health trials, with funding options available through the Government of PEI’s Department of Agriculture and the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership.
